Early Melt Causes Rivers and Streams to Run High

The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority is asking everyone to keep away from dangerous streams and creeks.

The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority is reminding everyone to steer clear of rivers and streams this time of year.

With the warm temperatures over the past couple of days the streams and rivers are moving very fast and can be very dangerous. Communications Specialist with the UTRCA Eleanor Heagy tells Heart FM many streams and ditches may still be hidden by snow and the ice cover is very unstable.

"It doesn't take much water to pull you in. Right now the river in Woodstock isn't going to be too bad - it's high but we are not in a danger of a flood right now, however it is still very dangerous. Definitely if you have kids, if you're a teacher or a caregiver, make sure that your kids are aware of the dangers the water can present right now and to stay away. Sometimes areas get flooded and people want to go walking in that area and that's not safe at all. It doesn't take much water to be really dangerous and it's muddy, it's slippery, so it is best to just stay away."

Heagy says it is a good idea to stay away from all watercourses in the region right now and they really wanted to get the message out to parents and pet owners.

She did say we could have some minor flooding in Woodstock and area if we get hit with a lot of rain on Tuesday night.
