City Hall is getting ready to open up nomination for next year's municipal election starting Jan. 2nd

Those thinking about running in the 2014 municipal election can start planning their run for office.

The City of Woodstock has set up their election page on their website, that right now, is focusing on what nominees need to know.

Deputy Clerk Amy Humpheries says those thinking about running need to take a few things into consideration.  "They're required to open a bank account, if you want to run for office.  There is also a filing fee that's associated with it.  It's $200 if they're running for the office of Mayor, and it's $100 for the other offices.  That money is refundable if he or she receives 2% of the vote."

The bank account stipulation is required for accurate reporting of campaign donations and expenses.  Humpheries says it's an important step, "It's really important that everything is clear...so that we can ensure all the rules of the Municipal Elections Act were followed."

Nominations don't officially start until January 2nd, 2014 and the last day to register as a candidate is September 12th, 2014 at 2PM.  You can nominate yourself only at City Hall when the Clerk's office is open.  Click here to view the city's election page for more info.

Municipal elections will be held October 27th, 2014.

City Clerk Louise Gartshore is hoping for a stronger voter turnout than 2010's 34%.  "Voting in a municipal election covers everything you deal with day to day...your roads, your sidewalk, your recreation.  Municipal government you are the closest to and you can get the most help from, so if you vote, that will help too."
