The House of Commons passed a motion to confirm the declaration of emergency powers under the Emergencies Act with a final vote of 185-to-151.
OTTAWA - The Emergencies Act has been passed in the House of Commons.
The motion to confirm the declaration of emergency powers passed yesterday evening with a final vote of 185-to-151. The Liberals and New Democrats voted in favour while the Conservatives and Bloc Quebecois were opposed.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act last week in response to the protest in Ottawa the blockades at several border crossings. The measures allow police to implement more fines and make more arrests in relation to the blockades. The Emergencies Act also gives banks the power to suspect or freeze the accounts of supporters without a court order.
The time-limited measures will be in effect until mid-March at the latest.
