Oxford EMS is seeing a spike in their calls as the heat wave continues to hammer the County. EMS Manager Joe Pember says the increase is coming from one specific group of people. "We're seeing an increase in calls from people who have chronic health conditions and in particular people that have respiratory difficulties. That segment of our call volume has really increased over the last couple of days as some of these people really seem to be struggling with the heat and humidity." Pember says even if it is a heat related call, paramedics still assess patients on a case by case basis. "Certainly, all of our ambulances are air conditioned and we do try as much as possible to get them into the back of the ambulance and into air conditioning but after that treatment is really dependant upon what the patient is experiencing." Pember has a specific favour to ask of Oxford residents. "If you have relatives or you have neighbours that you know have chronic health conditions or are seniors or small children and you know that they don't have air conditioning or access to air conditioning check on them. Keep an eye on them and check in with them frequently to make sure that they are doing alright and they are coping with the heat." He encourages locals to visit the County's website for a full list of cooling stations in their area.
