Firefighters will be going door to door in Norwich Township, checking to see if homes have working smoke/carbon monoxide alarms and giving alarms to those who need them.
NORWICH - Enbridge Gas has provided Norwich Fire Services with 144 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to distribute throughout the community.
Lead Fire Safety Educator for the Township of Norwich Derek Van Pagee says they will be going door to door in the Township.
"Finding out if people need the alarms and if we find a home with expired alarms or if they don't have any, then we give them these operating alarms."
Van Pagee says they will really be focusing on some of the older homes in the Township, that might not be equipped with carbon monoxide detectors.
Enbridge donates the alarms as part of the Safe Community Project Zero, a public education campaign that will provide over 16,600 alarms to residents in 70 municipalities across Ontario.
Director, Southeast Region Operations for Enbridge Gas Murray Costello says this year, Enbridge Gas invested $500,000 in Safe Community Project Zero, and over the past 13 years, the program has provided more than 68,000 alarms to Ontario fire departments.
"Carbon monoxide is known as the ‘silent killer’ for a reason, and we have proof that prevention saves lives. We know that the best way to avoid carbon monoxide exposure is to eliminate it at the source by properly maintaining fuel-burning equipment, and that the alarms are a critical second line of defense to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning."
Norwich Fire Chief Paul Groeneveld says early detection is the key, when it comes to fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.
"Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms have been proven to save lives through early detection. We are grateful for initiatives like this in a smaller community as fire prevention is so important in saving lives."
