NORFOLK COUNTY - Time for your daily reminder from the Norfolk OPP to only call 9-1-1 for emergencies.
The latest mishap happened on Saturday when two men got into an argument over which television channel they should be watching. One of the men actually called 9-1-1 over the petty dispute, tying up valuable resources.
These types of calls have been plaguing Norfolk County lately. Over the past month the Norfolk OPP have had 911 calls from an adult who was upset when their mom told them they were playing too many video games, a child who was upset he had to clean his room, a woman who said she was testing out her new phone and they recently had a call about a raccoon in a persons back yard.
On average, it takes at least two officers approximately thirty minutes to respond, investigate and clear the call. This puts enormous pressure on OPP resources when officers respond to unnecessary calls that can be prevented.
The use of 911 for emergency response continues to save lives when used appropriately and the OPP want those who need urgent help to use 911. The OPP also encourages families to discuss proper use of 911 to prevent hang ups and misdials from occurring.
