Oxford County - All long term care home residents in Oxford County have received the first dose of the Pfizer BioNtech vaccine.
This means over 1,100 LTC home residents in the Southwestern Public Health region have been given the first shot of the vaccine. The second dose is expected to be administered within 21 days. The Health Unit is waiting for more vaccine shipments to arrive before the rest of the LTC home residents can get a second dose.
These numbers do not include Long Term care residents that have already tested positive for COVID-19, as they are expected to have built up some immunity to the virus after contracting it once. Jamie Fletcher is leading the immunization work in the Southwestern Public Health Region and says a lot of work went into getting everyone a vaccine.
“A massive amount of work and marathon days made this achievement possible by both our own team and long-term care home administration. Doses in arms brought joy, tears and hope to the residents, staff, and families of the homes our mobile teams visited. This is a very hopeful moment in this pandemic for our communities. We will work diligently, despite supply and logistics challenges, to continue this positive momentum as we move into the next stage of this journey.”
The health unit also partnered with Oxford County Paramedic Services and Medavie EMS service to administer vaccines for this vulnerable population.
Second doses are scheduled for between 21-27 days for residents. All other individuals who have received a first dose of the Pfizer vaccine are eligible for their second dose within 42 days, which is still within the timeline outlined by Health Canada for full effectiveness.
