The teen shared explicit photos through a social media app with a stranger he met online and then was told to pay up, or the photo's would be made public.
NORFOLK COUNTY - Parents are being asked to have some tough conversations with your children after a local teen was the victim of extortion.
Police say the young man was chatting with a young woman on a social media app. At one point, the girl asked for explicit photographs, which the boy sent.
Shortly after this exchange, the victim was told he needed to pay $1,500 or else the photos would be shared all over social media. Police were called and no money changed hands.
Teens need to realize the long and short term dangers of sending out photographs and videos of themselves. Those who distribute it also need to be aware of the criminal ramifications of doing so.
Porn culture is becoming pop culture, and often parents do not know that their kids are involved, and it can be difficult to determine.
Acting Sargeant Ed Sanchuk says Porn culture is becoming pop culture, and often parents do not know that their kids are involved, and it can be difficult to determine.
"Everyone needs to realize the long and short term dangers when requests are made to send out sexually explicit photographs. Those who distribute it also need to be aware of the criminal ramifications of doing so. Once it's out there, you can't get it back and you should not be embarrassed to speak to police about your concerns."
Sanchuk says parents are encouraged to have honest and frank discussions with their kids, and explain that the images can often end up somewhere they may not want them to be. Be prepared to offer them some information about who they can turn to if they need help.
