Extortion In Norfolk County

Norfolk OPP are on the case after a scam artist tried to get the best out of a local resident.

NORFOLK COUNTY - Norfolk OPP are warning the public about the pay up or else scam.

Officers got a call from a concerned resident yesterday afternoon, who said they were being extorted via e-mail.

The victim had received an e-mail from someone claiming to have a video of them watching pornography through a webcam. They were told to pay $1,000 or they would send the video to everyone on their e-mail list.

Constable Ed Sanchuk says this is a common tactic used by scam artists.

"We want to let everyone know that these types of messages are commonly known as scareware and are designed to create anxiety and complete shock for the computer owner resulting in the owner sending money. So if you receive one of these messages please be aware it's a scam."

The victim in this case did not send the money over and instead contacted police.

Sanchuk has some tips to make you don't find yourself in this type of situation.

"Some of the steps you can do to protect yourself is always update your anti-virus software and operating systems regularly. If you have webcam when it's not in use cover it with a piece of tape, a blanket or whatever the case may be. Do not click on links or attachments in e-mails sent by somebody you don't know."

If you receive a message from a fraudster make sure you contact the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre.
