SWPH - Southwestern Public Health has issued a cold weather alert for Oxford, Elgin, Middlesex and St. Thomas.
Environment Canada says we'll have air temperatures in the negative teens over the next few days and we'll also have wind chill values around negative 26.
The cold weather is expected to continue until Sunday, so the health unit is advising that you stay indoors as much as possible and bundle up if you do have to go out. You should also avoid drinking caffeinated or alcoholic drinks because they could make you lose your body heat more quickly.
Those who are vulnerable to the extreme cold include seniors, young children, those who work outside and those partake in outdoor winter sports. The same goes for homeless individuals who don't have access to proper food, clothes or shelter.
You can find a list of local warming centres on the Southwestern Public Health website online here.
Hypothermia happens when your body temperature drops below 35 degrees Celsius and it can affect your ability to move and/or think clearly. The symptoms include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech and drowsiness.
Frostbite can make you lose the feeling and colour in your nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers, or toes. The skin will look white or grayish-yellow and it could also feel unusually firm or waxy.
Those with frostbite and/or hypothermia should seek medical attention.
