A local girl is looking to raise funds and awareness about ichthyosis. It's a rare skin disorder, which the eight year old has, that is characterized by dry, cracked and scaling skin. Her family has partnered with the Foundation for Ichthyosis and Related Skin Types or FIRST to hold a family Dance-a-thon. Ema's mother Sarah Hodgkinson says the proceeds of the event will not be going to the family. "Any funds raised that day willl go back to FIRST, which stands for Foundation for Ichthyosis and Related Skin Types and they support medical research, they support education, they support family conferences once every two years which we go and learn lots of things about nutrition, skin care, eye care, ear care, lots of things that are related to this disorder." Sarah says her daughter's condition is so rare it only occurs once in every 2.5 million births per year in Canada. The FIRST Family Dance-a-thon is being held May 11, 2013 from 11am - 7pm at the Oxford Auditorium. Tickets can be purchased at Merrifield Book Shop in Woodstock.
