City taxi companies asking council to consider $1 fare increases
You may soon have to budget a little extra to take a cab in Woodstock.
City Council is being asked to consider a one dollar increase in fares at their meeting Thursday night.
Office Manager for Star Taxi, Steve Murdoch says there are two driving factors for the increase.
"Since our last increase our fuel has gone up close to 13 percent and that is the biggest use is our fuel. That's one of our major costs. Our fuel bill in the month, you would be astonished at what we pay to run these vehicles in a month for fuel so that's basically it. Plus the cost of living, the drivers share, it helps them too."
Murdoch explains where the dollar amount came from. "Just a figure that was put out there and everybody agreed upon it. Like I said, it covers the increase in the fuel."
He says there's always a concern the demand for a taxi will go down if the price goes up.
"We usually have a small down turn at first. I think we saw that the last time. It's the same as anything that goes up in price, the consumer is going to rebel against the price but it's always a necessity and it's just a part of doing business, everything goes up, unfortunately nothing goes down in price."
The last taxi fare increase was in 2010 with the introduction of the Harmonized Sales Tax.
