The Federal budget will make it easier for new fathers to take paternity leave.
The Federal Budget from the Liberal party includes more benefits to fathers taking parental leave.
An additional $1.2 billion will be spent over five years to create a new five week, use it or lost it incentive for new fathers. The Employment Insurance Parental Sharing Benefit would increase E.I. parental leave to a maximum of 40 weeks in cases where the second parent agrees to take at least five weeks off. It covers 55 percent of the second parent's income for as much as 12 months.
The benefit will be offered to adoptive and same sex couples and will start in June 2019. In cases where families are taking the 18 months of parental leave, the second parent will now be able to take as much as eight weeks off, which will be paid out at 33 percent of their income.
The goal is to have both parents share the responsibility of raising a child and allow mothers a chance to return to the work force sooner.
