Prime Minister Trudeau is going to ask the House of Commons today for a rapid approval of his Governments $9B Student Aid Package. He also announced more details of the Aid Package today.
CANADA - The Federal Government is going to table a $9 Billion Student Aid Package in the House of Commons Today.
The Government first announced details of the plan last week and they are going to ask the House of Commons for a rapid approval today, so the money can get to students immediately. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the Aid package will help students all across Canada.
"If you can't find a job this summer but want to help in the fight against COVID-19 this summer, we are going to make sure you have support too. Students helping in the fight against COVID-19 this summer will soon be eligible for $1,000 to $5,000 through the new Canada Student Service Grant for volunteer hours. We are also going to be providing specific support for First Nations, Inuit and Metis students. For graduate students and those conducting research, we are going to extend scholarships, fellowships and grants so your work can continue and we are doubling student grants for low and middle income students for 2020-2021."
Trudeau says this is a $9 billion dollar plan to help students and recent grads get through the next few months.
"Since we introduced this plan, we have been working with the opposition parties on legislation that will get this help to students as soon as possible. I will be heading to Parliament shortly, where we will introduce a bill to put the Canada Emergency Student Benefit in place."
The Canada Emergency Student Benefit will offer students $1,250 a month from May until August and if you take care of someone else or have a disability, that amount will go up to $1,750 each month.
Students can only apply for this benefit if they did not already qualify for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit or E.I.
