Drinking and driving laws could become a whole lot tougher in Canada with mandatory jail sentences in fatal crashes.
Drinking and driving laws could become a whole lot tougher in Canada.
Two years after they made the promise to crack down on drinking and driving the Conservatives introduced the Dangerous and Impaired Driving act today. Because the bill was not introduced until the final days of Parliament it would not be implemented until after the Federal election. If passed the act would increase maximum penalties for impaired driving and introduce mandatory jail time instead of fines for some offences. The new law would also limit certain defences used by people charged with impaired driving. One of the biggest changes if the bill is approved is it would increase mandatory minimum sentences for impaired driving causing death from a $1,000 fine to six years in jail. The maximum sentence for impaired driving causing bodily harm would jump to 14 years in prison.
