Field Of Dreams

(submitted)

The Toronto Blue Jays teamed up with the Van Boekel Field of Dreams to inspire young girls to get on the ball diamond.

EAST-ZORRA TAVISTOCK - A Toronto Blue Jays Program got a taste of rural Oxford.

The MLB team surprised farmer Mike Van Boekel when they asked about his baseball field he built.

"My phone rang and it was a member of the Blue Jays organization. I didn't really take it too seriously, I thought it was one of my buddies playing a joke. They said no, we saw it on the internet. We had a little talk and they were very interested about using it to do, they didn't know what kind of event."

Multiple busses full of kids were brought to the Van Boekel Field of Dreams for their Girls at Bat program.

The event is meant to empower young girls and spread their interest in baseball.

Van Boekel decided the GTA girls should experience a little of rural Ontario.

"We brought some other animals into our farm and had kind of a petting zoo set up because a lot of these families, a lot of these parents have never seen or touched a lot of farm animals before. It was really good from a perspective of, not only the baseball, but just to show them more of what rural Ontario looked like."

The Blue Jays look forward to bringing a bigger event to the farm in the coming years.

The baseball diamond was built by Van Boekel after his sons broke too many windows.
