Fire Code Violations

Woodstock Property Owner to pay $9300 in fines

WOODSTOCK - A Woodstock property owner has been ordered to pay more than 93 hundred dollars in fines following several fire code violations.

Back in March of this year, Woodstock Fire responded to a fire at 401 and 403 Dundas Street. During their investigation they found several infractions related to the building owner not performing their annual maintenance of the building's fire protection systems. 
 
As a result, Leon Singer was charged with 9 counts of violating the Ontario Fire Code and has since pleaded guilty to 7 of the charges.
 
  1. failure to ensure fire alarm system for the entire building was in operating condition (fine of $2,000)
  2. failure to ensure that fire alarm system was inspected and tested annually by a qualified fire alarm contractor (fine of $1,000)
  3. failure to prepare and implement an approved fire safety plan (fine of $1,500),
  4. failure to ensure doors in a fire separation was maintained operable at all times to ensure proper closing and latching (fine of $500)
  5. failure to ensure exit signs are illuminated (fine of $1,000)
  6. failure to ensure annual maintenance and testing of portable extinguishers was performed by a qualified contractor (fine of $1,000)
  7. failure to ensure each portable extinguisher is equipped with a tag showing maintenance or recharge date (fine of $500)
