A burning issue at City Hall is back on Thursday night. City Council has 3 new options on the table for an open-air burning by-law. They sent it back last time, after councillors complained the proposed fees were too high. The new options include no fee, a $45-fee every 3-years, or a one-time $75-fee. Regardless, new permits in each option have to be applied for every 3-years. Fire Prevention Officer Jeff Slager tells Heart FM what that money would be used for. "We're going to be utilizing any fee brought in for an advertising for an educational and awareness set up for those that can know how to burn properly throughout the season. But also those maybe having issues with what avenues are available to them to deal with those concerns and complaints." Also to be discussed Thursday night, a provision for the by-law that would see an indoor inspection of smoke detectors in your home, in order to gain your outdoor burning permit. Slager says it's a part of the by-law in Sault Ste. Marie, and explains why it has piqued their interest. "If you're saying that outside your home you're going to be practicing fire safety, we want to verify that inside your home, you're practicing fire safety. It's verification of the law that you have to have a working smoke alarm on every level. That is something new we are proposing, and again, council will have the decision as to whether they want to include that."
