Norwich Township Council has approved a motion, asking staff to research some of the flag bylaws and policies in place in other municipalities.

NORWICH TOWNSHIP - Norwich Township is looking into the flag bylaws and policies that other municipalities have in place.

Ward 1 Councillor John Scholten brought a forward a motion during Monday's meeting, asking staff to research what other areas have been doing and bring a report back to council. The motion was approved and Mayor Larry Martin expects the report to come back to council by late September at the earliest.

There's been lots of discussion in regards to flags in Norwich over the past few months, after the BIA hung Progress flags in the downtown core in honour of Pride Month. The flags were put up just before the May long weekend, but they were stolen and vandalized shortly afterward. The OPP launched an investigation and two people have been charged. The BIA was able to hang new Progress flags in late June and they have since been taken down.

Township Council heard a delegation from Jacob Day during their meeting in late June, which included hateful remarks toward the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. The delegation lasted close to 30 minutes and Mayor Martin has faced a lot of backlash for not putting a stop to it.

During the next Township Council meeting on July 12th, members of the local group Norwich Residents for Love and Acceptance presented a delegation to Council calling for Martin's resignation as Norwich Township Mayor and Warden of Oxford County. Martin stated that he did not stop Dey's delegation because it was a volatile environment and he was worried about the safety of everyone in Council Chambers.
