Flu Season Not Over Yet

Oxford County Public Health

It's been a long flu season for anyone working in the health sector.

OXFORD COUNTY - It's been a long flu season for anyone working in the health sector.

Oxford County Public Health says we have experienced 18 outbreaks in long term care and retirement lately.

Program Supervisor of Health Protection Elaine Reddick says there's more than one strain of the virus going around.

"Currently we have four going on and these have all been due to influenza A or influenza B. It has been a bit unusual that we see both types of the flu circulating at the same time, which we have been seeing this year."

Whenever two or more people in a home show respiratory symptoms, they're tested for the flu virus. If the tests come back positive an outbreak in declared.

Reddick says it has been a severe flu season in Oxford.

"This is the most outbreaks in long term care and retirement that I've seen in quite a few years now happening in a flu season. It has been very busy and I know the hospitals have been busy."

If you have the flu Reddick says you should stay home in order to prevent the spread. She also recommends getting immunized if you haven't already.
