Public Health Ontario reported a positivity rate of 18.3 percent as of November 29th
SWPH - The holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year, but it could be quite the letdown if you happen to get sick.
Public Health Ontario says the province could see a spike in flu cases in the next few weeks. It reported a positivity rate of 18.3 percent as of November 29th and it's supposed to rise from now until early January.
Dr. Ninh Tran, the Medical Officer of Health for Southwestern Public Health, says there are ways you can be proactive so you can have a happy and healthy holiday season.
"It comes down to the three principles of public health: protection, prevention and promotion. When combined, these actions have the greatest opportunity for a healthy holiday season."
In terms of protection, Southwestern Public Health is encouraging everyone to get vaccinated against the flu, COVID-19, and RSV if they're eligible.
To prevent the spread of illness, health officials recommend washing your hands often, covering your coughs and sneezes, and cleaning high-tech surfaces when you can. You should stay home if you do happen to get sick. If you still find yourself in a crowded spaces or with a young child or senior, make sure you wear a mask to protect them.
Looking at the promotion aspect, health officials say you should encourage healthy eating and physical acvitity, while also staying hydrated and bringing fresh air into your home when possible.
