Some of the proposed changes include increasing advance polling days from 5 to 10 and doubling the amount people can donate to a candidate or party and extending third party advertising limits.
ONTARIO - The Ontario Government is proposing changes to the Elections act, that they say will make it easier to vote in future Provincial Elections.
If passed these changes would include increasing advance polling days from 5 to 10 and double the amount people can donate to a candidate, constituency association, leadership contestant or party from $1,650 to $3,300 per year.
Other changes include extending third party advertising spending limits from 6 to 12 months before an election and a definition of collusion to help protect Ontario's elections from outside influence and interference.
The changes would also clarify the rules that allow MPP's to maintain personal social media accounts before, during and after a writ period.
According to Elections Ontario, the scale of third party advertising in Ontario is greater than at the federal level. Ontario is the only Province where third-party spending is counted in millions, rather than thousands.
During the last election, third parties spent over $5 million during the election period and the six months prior to the election.
