Woodstock City Councillor Ron Fraser will serve as Deputy Mayor this year.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock City Councillor Ron Fraser is the new Deputy Mayor for 2021.
Fraser was elected to the position by his peers and will take over for Councillor Schadenberg. He says the council elects a new Deputy every year to fill in for the Mayor when they are unavailable. He explains why he decided to accept this position.
"I've always been a strong proponent of a good community and a good governance of council. I was more than willing to step up and take that position as Deputy Mayor, if and when the current Mayor, Mr. Birtch is unavailable."
Fraser is a former Police chief and has survived cancer twice, including a recent battle with colon cancer in 2020. Fraser was a Woodstock City Councillor from 2010-2014 and he decided to not run again in 2014 after his first diagnosis with cancer. Fraser was able to beat that and when he was declared cancer free, he decided to run again in 2018. Last year in February he was diagnosed with another cancer, this time in the colon.
Fraser says this time, he was able to fulfill his duties while going through chemotherapy and surgery to remove the cancer.
"Because of the pandemic and the fact that all of the meetings went online, I was able to stay home and recuperate, do my treatments and participate."
Fraser says the surgery was successful and he is ready and willing to fill in as Deputy Mayor whenever the need arises.
