If you are wanting to add a rental unit to your current home, you could be eligible for funding from the County.
OXFORD COUNTY - A funding program is being rolled out in Oxford County.
The "My Second Unit" funding program is for resident looking to add a second unit to their home and rent it out. Successful applicants would be given an interest-free, forgivable loan of up to $30,000, which would be put towards a secondary livable space. The second unit would be a single, self-contained, rental apartment with its own entrance, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom.
There are certain qualifications that need to be met and they include, the homeowner must agree to remain as the owner and live in the home during the 10-year forgivable period, but the agreement could be transferred to a new homeowner with the approval of the County. The rent for the second unit must be at or below the average market rents set by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing each year, and the homeowner must have tenants that meet prescribed household income criteria. The amount for the loan will be based on construction-related costs required to build or construct the secondary unit.
If the program is something that interests you, you have until December 15th, 2025 to submit your application, and you can find out more information about the program by visiting the Oxford County website.
