Gets Your Snow Shovels Ready!

The City of Woodstock is reminding property owners that they have 24 hours to clear the snow and ice from the sidewalks in front of their properties after snow event.

WOODSTOCK - Another blast of winter is expected to hit the region today.

Environment Canada is predicting somewhere between 20-30 centimetres by tomorrow morning.

Manager of Building and Facilities for the City of Woodstock Craig Wallace says residents are required to remove snow from the sidewalk 24 hours after a snow event.

"The by-law states homeowners must remove and clean all snow and ice from sidewalks in front of their properties, adjacent to a street, within 24 hours of the end of the snow event."

Wallace says if the City has to come out and clean the sidewalk in front of your home, you could end up fitting the bill.

"If the City feels the sidewalk is not being attended too, they will drop off a 24 hour notice and if it is not complied too, a contractor will come in and clean that sidewalk and it will be billed to your taxes."

Wallace did say they prefer to educate, rather than fine.

"This is the second winter for the by-law and I'm going to say 80 percent of the sidewalks in Woodstock are well taken care of, we prefer to educate people on their responsibility to clear that sidewalk, failing that, we do have a contractor on call that will come in and do that work and it will be billed to the property owner."

Residents who are unable to physically remove the snow are expected to make other arrangements. Woodstock does have the Snow Buddies program for seniors and anyone with a disability.
