Several local organizations have teamed up for a new coalition to try and find solutions to the youth suicide problem.
WOODSTOCK - A long term youth suicide prevention council has been formed in the city of Woodstock.
The Suicide Prevention Oxford Leadership Coalition has representatives from 12 local organizations.
Right now the coalition is working on a community needs assessment, which will help bridge gaps in mental health care in the area.
Acting Chair Marc Roberts hopes the assessment will help them discover what caused the concerns to begin with.
"We're very hopeful too that this will tell us what caused the mental health issues or concerns that have been going on. We'll try to get right to the root source of what that difficulty is."
Roberts says they are also working on a Be Safe app to help youth in the community.
"This application will be given to every child within the high school system so if they have a problem it will tell them exactly where they should go and who they should contact for service."
The Be Safe app will be available to download on smartphones and a paper version will also be available. The application will hopefully be ready in September.
The groups involved in the coalition include:
- Woodstock Police
- Oxford OPP
- Thames Valley District School Board
- London District Catholic School Board
- Conseil Scolaire Catholique Providence
- City of Woodstock
- Woodstock Hospital
- Oxford County Public Health
- Community Health Centre
- Canadian Mental Health Association of Oxford
- Children's Aid Society
- Oxford Elgin Child and Youth Centre
