The CAMI plant will halt production next week due to a worldwide semiconductor shortage.
INGERSOLL - Roughly 1,500 workers will be eligible for layoff benefits once the CAMI Plant in Ingersoll halts production next week.
The shutdown is expected to last a week and it's being caused by a worldwide semiconductor shortage. Semiconductor chips have been hard to come by for automakers because there's an increased demand for them in phones and gaming systems.
GM will also halt production in Kansas and Mexico and a plant in South Korea will operate at half capacity.
GM reached a deal with Unifor just last month which includes a $1-billion investment towards the Ingersoll plant so it can start producing EV600 electric vans. The automaker has already lined up two companies to purchase the vans.
