Grandparent Scam on the Rise in Oxford and Beyond

The Oxford OPP says the grandparent scam is on the rise, so officers will be hosting an information session at the Tillsonburg Senior Centre tomorrow morning.

OXFORD COUNTY - The Oxford OPP would like to shine a light on the grandparent scam.

Media Relations Officer Patti Cote says it's on the rise in Oxford and beyond.

"In Oxford County, the OPP has received approximately six reports in the last two weeks alone, but it's happening everywhere around us right now."

The grandparent scam is when a fraudster calls someone, usually a senior, and claims to be a police officer. They will tell the victim that they have one of their family members in custody, and they need to pay their bail in order for them to be released. They will instruct the victim go to to their bank to get cash and another officer will stop by their home to pick it up.

Cote says a real police officer would never demand money in this manner.

"Police would never phone anybody and ask for money to bail someone out. They would explain possibly that somebody needs someone else to be in court for them, but they would never actually say you need to give us money."

Officers will be hosting a free information session at the Tillsonburg Senior Centre tomorrow for those who want to learn more about the scam and how they can protect themselves. Everything will begin at 10:00 a.m. and OPP officers will be able to answer any questions you may have. Cote says the presentation should last about one hour.

The Tillsonburg Senior Centre is located at 45 Hardy Ave, inside the Tillsonburg Community Centre.

Cote stopped by the Heart FM studio to chat with Dan and Marcie this morning and you can listen to the full interview below.
