Grandparents Scam Hits The Region

Norfolk OPP received a call from a senior on Monday who was contacted by someone posing as a police offer requesting money for a loved one in distress.

NORFOLK COUNTY - It's been referred to as the grandparents scam and its more common that you would think.

Norfolk OPP received a call from a senior on Monday who was contacted by someone posing as a police offer requesting money.

The fraudster said the seniors' daughter was in a car accident while driving under the influence, and the money was needed to pay for the damages.

OPP Media Relations Officer, Constable Ed Sanchuk says victims fall prey with the best intentions.

"I can tell you we have unfortunately had seniors that have sent thousands of dollars to individuals indicating that there is a family member in distress and all they want to do is try to help."

Sanchuk says that these situations often go unreported as people are embarrassed for being a victim to such scams, he offers an easy tip to avoid being out of pocket.

"If you receive a call in this manner, contact your family immediately and inquire if anyone needs assistance, but please do not forward any funds without speaking to family members first."

In this age of modern technology, scammers now more than ever can gain access to personal information before attempting to contact their victims.  OPP say it is imperative to verify unsolicited calls.
