The Meaning of Home national writing contest is for students in Grades 4, 5 and 6 and submissions are being accepted until February 21st.
OXFORD COUNTY - Habitat For Humanity is holding a national writing contest.
The Meaning of Home is in support of Habitat for Humanity Canada and it is for students in Grades 4, 5 and 6.
Senior Associate Community Engagement Amber Flight says it's raised over $1.5 million dollars so far.
"We find that kids get empowered. Every winner seems to be able to just spread the word even quicker, get more students involved."
The contest was founded by Genworth Canada in 2007 to helps raise money and awareness for Habitat for Humanity Canada. Flight adds the money goes towards building decent and affordable housing in our communities.
She says every student entry earns $10.00 towards their local Habitat For Humanity and there's three grand prizes up for grabs. She says there is a prize from each grade and they're going to receive a $30,000 grant that gets directed to the local Habitat For Humanity build of their choice.
There will also be nine runner ups, three from each grade and they'll receive a $10,000 grant to a local Habitat For Humanity build of their choice.
Flight says the students' essays or poems can either be submitted by mail or online.
"Teachers and parents who are interested in having their Grade 4, 5 and 6 students participate can also access an educational hub online at www.meaningofhome.ca."
The website features past winners and a book is sent out every year that contains their poems.
On top of the three grand prizes up for grabs, additional prizes include an iPad and a class party for the winners.
Submissions are being accepted until February 21st.
