The Calgary Police officer who was killed in the line of duty is originally from Haldimand County and went to high school in Hagersville.
HAGERSVILLE - Local police and the community of Hagersville continue to mourn the death of a Calgary Police officer.
Sgt. Andrew Harnett was killed in the line of duty on New Years Eve. He was only 37 years old. Harnett was killed when he was hit by a vehicle fleeing a traffic stop. Despite the heroic attempts by his colleagues and members of EMS, he died as a result of his injuries. Two teens have since turned themselves in and have been charged with first degree murder.
Harnett is actually from Ontario and went to Hagersville Secondary School. The school community has sent out a message of support to Harnett's friends and family. Local police detachments, including the West Region OPP and Woodstock Police have also expressed their condolences for this senseless tragedy.
Andrew's brother, Jason Harnett has stated the family is heartbroken by the news, urging others to reach out to your family members and tell them how much you love them.
