WOODSTOCK - Handbags for Hospice was another smashing success raising over $143,000 last Friday night at the Oxford Auditorium.
The highlight of the night was a surprise bidding war, which was captured on video by Heart FM. Unifor Local 88 actually rigged the bid on one purse so that they could donate $25,000.
Manager of Fund Development for VON Oxford Trish Gergich describes the atmosphere in the building when the $25,000 bid was made.
"There was a ton of energy in that room at that moment, it was both exciting and also really emotional for everybody in that room and such a huge surprise, to catch that moment, to be a part of it, it was just really exciting."
The Oxford Auditorium was a packed house for the event once again. Several volunteers stopped by to help including the Woodstock Fire Department and members of the Woodstock Navy Vets were on hand to help clean up afterwards.
Gergich says all of the money raised last Friday night will go towards Sakura House.
"This funding actually goes towards the day to day operations at Sakura House, so while the nurses and PSW are funded by the Government, everything else is actually funded by donations, so this event will help support day to day costs like the food program, the volunteer program and just the regular bills like hydro and heat and things like that."
The fundraiser has brought in over $840,000 over the past eight years.
