MPP Ernie Hardeman is backing the municipal councils for Zorra, Ingersoll, South-West Oxford, Woodstock and Oxford County in the battle against the proposed Southwest Landfill.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman is happy to see local municipalities taking advantage of Bill 197.
“I’m pleased to see that our local councils have made use of the tools provided by our government to empower municipalities to have a say about how landfills impact their communities."
The Ford Government passed Bill 197 back in July 2020. It includes an amendment to the Environmental Assessment Act which states that a landfill developer must have support from the host community in order for their environmental assessment to receive approval.
The municipal councils for Zorra, South-West Oxford, Ingersoll and Oxford County recently passed motions stating they do not support the proposed Southwest Landfill. Woodstock City Council joined that list yesterday, after Councillor Mark Schadenberg brought a motion forward.
Hardeman says if municipalities can say no to a new Tim Hortons, they should be able to say no to a landfill.
