WOODSTOCK - Woodstock is getting a brand new Hazardous Waste Depot thanks to funding from the Provincial and Federal Government.
It is going to cost over $2 million dollars to build the facility. Both sets of governments will each pay one third of the cost at $667,667 and the City of Woodstock will pay for the rest. MPP for Cambridge Katherine McGarry was on hand for the announcement and explains the Provinces role in this investment. "We have $130 Billion dollars earmarked over the next 10 years, the largest infrastructure investment ever in the Province of Ontario, really to go to communities all over Ontario including today in Woodstock."
Local MP Dave Mackenzie was on hand for the announcement as well and says he thinks this will encourage more residents to properly dispose of their household waste. "When you have that opportunity to properly dispose of things, people want to do that, the problem now is lot's of times, people don't know where to take things, so they just end up sitting in a basement, for some reason or another they end up getting dumped where they shouldn't."
Woodstock Mayor Trevor Birtch echoed those comments saying this will make it easier to properly dispose of Hazardous waste like paint and household chemicals. "It will allow residents to bring household hazardous waste to a permanent depot location, rather than having it on special event days where some residents may be out of the city on that particular day or time."
Construction at the depot on James Street should start next year and the depot will likely be ready by 2017.
