Enjoy bats from a distance. That's the message coming from Oxford County Public Health as bats become more active around this time of year. The winged mammal has a chance of carrying rabies, a virus fatal to people. The county's Program Supervisor in Health Protection Elaine Reddick says although humans must avoid contact, bats can be quite beneficial to the environment. A single bat can capture 600 mosquitoes an hour. If you do come into contact with one by being bitten or scratched, seek medical attention. So far this year, of the 12 cases of rabid animals reported in Ontario, 9 have been bats. For details about rabies, visit the Oxford County Public Health website.
