The heat warning could become an extended heat warning as the conditions are expected to continue into Tuesday.
Oxford County Public Health and Emergency Services have issued the first heat warning of the year.
Environment Canada is calling for temperatures in the low 30's over the next could days and overnight lows in the 20's. The heat warning could become an extended heat warning as the conditions are expected to continue into Tuesday.
Residents are advised to take some extra precautions when caring for children and others at risk of heat related illness. Children, seniors and people with chronic health problems are the most susceptible to the heat. Adults caring for children should watch for the usual signs of physical distress, such as rapid breathing, weakness, and headache, as well as symptoms like vomiting, sleepiness, or changes in behaviour, for instance, temper tantrums.
Tips to protect your health in the heat:
- Drink lots of water and avoid alcoholic beverages
- Avoid going outdoors when the heat is most intense, typically between 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
- If you are outdoors, wear a hat or stay in the shade
- Avoid intense outdoor activity
- Never leave a child or pet in a car
- Be aware of medication you are taking as some prescription and over-the-counter drugs and increase your sensitivity to the sun and heat
- Check on family, friends and neighbours who are at risk of health complications from heat-related illness
UPDATE (Sunday June 11 6:02am) - Environment Canada has also issued heat warnings for Oxford County, Perth County, Brant County and Middlesex County.
