It's a slap on the wrist for Harold Couwenberg, as he was sentenced for stealing $22,000 from the Burgessville Firefighters Association. The 50-year-old former treasurer of the Association was sentenced today to 4-months of house arrest, and 2-months of strict curfew, without probation. Justice Peter Issacs told Couwenburg, that back when he was in law school "A breach of trust like this, would be automatic jail time." But after reviewing Couwenburg's involvement in the community, a much lesser sentence was given. Issacs pointed out that Couwenburg has never been before the court in the past. He's a minor baseball coach, a farmer and a member of many committees in Norwich. Judge Issacs said "In your particular case, the jail sentence is one that you can serve in the community." Back in April, Couwenberg pleaded guilty to theft over $5000, while charges of fraud, breach of trust by a public officer, and uttering a forged document were dropped. The initial complaint was filed to the OPP in December 2011.
