HPPH Starting West Nile Virus Surveillance

Mosquitoes carrying WNV have been discovered in Huron and Perth over the last several years, however the amount of human infection has gone down over the past 5 years.

Huron Perth Public Health has started West Nile Virus surveillance.

WNV is a disease transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Some people who get WNV will have mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. That said, people with weaker immune systems and those with chronic diseases are at a greater risk.

Mosquitoes carrying WNV have been discovered in Huron and Perth over the last several years, however the amount of human infection has gone down over the past 5 years.

Public Health Inspector Stephanie Carlisle says you can stop mosquitoes from breeding by getting rid of standing water around the home at least once a week.

“Objects that collect water, like birdbaths, children’s toys, pool covers and tires, are perfect mosquito breeding grounds.”

HPPH recommends that residents and visitors protect themselves from mosquito bites:

- Use insect repellent containing DEET or Icaridin on clothing and exposed skin. Always read and follow label directions.

- Cover up with light-coloured clothes and wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors. Especially in areas where mosquito activity is high.

- Avoid spending time outdoors from dusk until dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
