If you plan on taking part in the hunt this year, make safety your number one concern.
OXFORD COUNTY - A hunting we will go.
The Controlled Deer Hunting Season has begun in Oxford County.
Owner of Mapleton Taxidermy & Cheese Store, David Snook says there are three important dates to recognize. "We have 3 seasons the first week of November, the 3rd week of November, 1st week of December, and most areas now it is Monday to Sunday with one deer only. In the last couple years a lot of deer have died and we noticed last year we were down a minimum 25% on the hunt. An archer cannot hunt during the muzzle or controlled hunts."
The limit for this year is one deer because of how devastating the harsh winters have been for the deer population.
Snook says the biggest concern should be safety. "The guns can't be loaded until they are off the highways, always be looking for hunters in your area so that you are not shooting towards the hunter - accidents are just caused by carelessness on the hunter's behalf. You can't hunt after sunset or sunrise: it has to be daylight hours before you can actually hunt. If you're hunting after those hours you are poaching." Hunters must also be sure to outfit themselves in bright florescent orange so other hunters can see them.
Last year, Snook tells us, there were several complaints about trespassing. "The biggest thing is the hunters need to have respect for other hunters, and they have to have major respect for the landowners that allow them to hunt on their properties. We've had a lot of problems in the past with trespassing issues, and these are main concerns with every hunt. We always seem to get all kinds of complaints, people come from other areas and they just come here and think they can go where they want and hunt where they want."
