WOODSTOCK - A strike is underway outside Hydmech in Woodstock.
Unifor Local 636 President Brent Thompson says they're protesting the current workplace conditions, adding the membership would like everyone to be treated equally and fairly.
He says the union spoke with the employer off and on over the past couple of days. They started the strike at 5:00 a.m. today after membership gave them are hard mandate during their ratification meeting.
"We'll go until we have a general consensus from the membership. We are currently continuing to try to bargain with the employer and we are trying to get the employer back to the table so we can put a resolve to this in a fair and equitable way."
Thompson says they have quite the turnout.
"There are 62 members that all work at Hydmech and they are all here currently holding up four laneways. We are not stopping traffic, we are not breaking laws, we are not doing anything but just doing a legal strike."
The Hydmech plant is located at the corner of Parkinson Road and Beards Lane. It produces metal band saws, cold saws and more. We have reached out to Hydmech for comment.
