Starting on Sunday, Hydro rates will be going up in Ontario.
Hydro rates are set to increase across the Province on Sunday.
Rates will increase for the peak period to 18 cents a kilowatt hour. It's estimated the increase will cost the average family in Ontario an extra $37.56 a year. MPP for Oxford Ernie Hardeman says people are really frustrated with the reasoning for the spike.
"Hydro One applied for an increase because they were delivering less power so when the minister was asked about it he said it was because people were using less hydro so we have to pay more for the distribution cost."
Hardeman says hydro costs are getting out of control and a lot of families in Oxford are already struggling to pay the bills and this is not going to help. He thinks some people will have to make some tough decisions like paying for hydro or rent because they won't be able to afford both.
"There is going to be people making choices whether they should buy food or pay their electricity bill or pay their rent or their electricity bill because they just don't have anymore money to go around, I think government has an obligation to try and make it livable financially in the Province of Ontario, not to just forever keep increasing our costs."
