The Oxford County Federation of Agriculture presented its case on how to improve Oxford County's economy.
OXFORD COUNTY - The Oxford County Federation of Agriculture is looking at ways to improve economies across rural Ontario.
The OCFA held a presentation on distributing economic development during last night's council meeting.
Director Crispin Colvin says boosting the economy can help Oxford County.
"They would see certainly some growth in some of their smaller centres, be it Embro, certainly Woodstock would probably benefit from it because they are jobs available in these areas. Economic housing issues are good, you can buy a house in Embro for a lot less than you can in Toronto. So the benefit to Oxford is you get a skilled workforce, you increase your productivity and your economic tax base grows as well."
The OCFA's presentation looked at how different industries can produce a better economy for rural Ontario, including Oxford County.
Colvin adds an improved economy can bring in a variety of jobs to the County, including technology, manufacturing and construction.
But it does come with its share of challenges, however.
Colvin says it's important communities are aware of the value of agriculture.
"Our biggest challenge is making sure that our voice is heard and that they recognize the value agriculture has. And I think it happens but it takes a lot of work and lobbying on our behalf, and on groups like the OCFA to make it happen."
