Pope Francis meets with indigenous leaders and residential school survivors.

Pope Francis met with Metis and Inuit leaders at the Vatican today.

Eight Metis delegates, including indigenous leaders and residential school survivors spoke with the pontiff, in hopes of making progress towards reconciliation.

Cassidy Caron, the president of the Metis National Council, said the Pope didn't offer an apology for the church's role in the residential school system, though the group has requested it to take place in Canada.

Meanwhile, Natan Obed, president of the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) noted there was a sense of openness and kindness shown to the Inuit delegation.

On Thursday, the Pope will meet with First Nation delegates.

The Pope is facing increased calls to travel to Canada and apologize for the Church's role in the residential school system.

Within the past year, hundreds of unmarked graves have been found at former residential school sites.
