A study of Ingersoll's planning and engineering services recommends charging residents up to $80 an hour for consultations with the town engineer.
INGERSOLL - A study of building permit, planning, and engineering services for the Town of Ingersoll revealed the town is not charging any money for the engineering or planning services they provide. The study recommended charging $60 - $80 per hour for the use of the Town Engineer or Senior Engineering Technologist.
"Under the Ontario building code we do have the ability to recover our full costs in relation to delivering that service. If you don't do that then the costs that aren't covered by the permit fees have to be borne by the general tax rate," pointed out Ingersoll CAO William Tigert.
Also evaluated was the building permit fee structure. According to Tigert studies of building permits usually take place every 5 to 10 years. The last time the fee structure was analyzed was back in 2005.
"So the exercise was to look at that cost, see how close we are to covering that cost, and give council the option to adjust the fees to recover more or all of that cost."
A public meeting was held to gather input on the proposed changes. One included increasing the cost of building permits.
"Each one of the permits that we are proposing is significantly more than what we are currently charging because we are not collecting anywhere close to the cost of the service."
