Ingersoll Council looking at options to end train whistling at specific crossings in the town.
INGERSOLL - The Town of Ingersoll plans to discuss ending early morning trains in Ingersoll whistling at crossings. Ingersoll residents are displeased with early morning trains blaring their horns while passing through the town. The Town of Ingersoll received several complaints regarding the train whistling. Ingersoll Town Engineer Sandra Lawson said that the whistling has been creating sleep disturbances amongst citizens, "if you are hearing it at 2:30 in the morning it's waking you up, disturbing your sleep, and disturbing children..."
A few crossings already have whistling bans in place at certain crossings in the city but not towards the south end of the town. The whistling is a vital safety feature used by train operators to warn motorists.
Typically Transport Canada regulates train whistling, however Lawson said, "All trains are required by law to whistle unless there are special instructions and we have special instructions for the CP line on Pemberton, Mutual and Thames Street at those crossing where the CP does not blow the whistle."
The process to end train whistling is lengthy and could be costly.
