An elderly Norfolk resident was the victim of a $103,000 lottery scam.
NORFOLK COUNTY - Over $100,000 was fraudulently taken from an elderly Norfolk resident in an international lottery scam. On January 8th, the resident received several calls from unknown individuals claiming the resident had won various lotteries. The resident was then asked to forward money to Alberta and Jamaican addresses in order to 'cover taxes' associated with the winnings.
According to the Norfolk OPP fraud is a multi-billion dollar industry. The best way residents can avoid becoming a victim of a scam is to simply hang up the phone. Police encourage residents to be aware of the scams which usually arise from unsolicited calls claiming to be legitimate companies or organizations.
