It's International Women's Day and the theme this year is #EmbraceEquity.
WOODSTOCK - A flag raising ceremony is about to take place in Woodstock's Museum Square in honour of International Women's Day.
Mayor Jerry Acchione will read the official proclamation at 3:00 p.m. today. Representatives will be there from the Zonta Club of Woodstock including Maria Odumodu.
Odumodu explains the importance of this day and why we should all mark the occasion.
"It's a day to celebrate those who have had an impact on our lives and on whose shoulders we stand as we move forward to improve the status of women."
She tells us about the theme of this year's International Women's Day.
"This year the theme is Embrace Equity. We should all hug ourselves because if we love ourselves, we would be willing to extend that love to somebody else. It's the golden rule, do to others as you want done to you."
The Zonta Club of Woodstock will be celebrating International Women's Day leading up to its Golf Classic at Craigowan Golf Club on Wednesday June 7th. This will be the 25th year of the women's only tournament, and they're going to highlight 25 women who empower others using special signs set up throughout the golf course the day of. All of the money raised will stay in the community.
Zonta International is an organization that includes women from 66 countries all dedicated to empowering women and girls. The Woodstock chapter was first established in 1960 and you can click here to find more information regarding the club and the upcoming Golf Classic.
