In an interview with Dan and Marcie, Oxford County MP Dave MacKenzie talked about his reason for retiring and thanked the people of Oxford County for their support over the years.
OXFORD COUNTY - Dave MacKenzie is ready for the next chapter in his life.
He has been the Conservative MP for Oxford County for almost 20 years now and he's going to officially retire on January 28th.
"In the time I have spent as the Member of Parliament, I can't think that there has been a better riding to have served than the Oxford riding. The people are fantastic, they have treated me very well and my staff well. I just wish the best for all of them and the best in this holiday season."
MacKenzie says his reason for retiring now is completely personal.
"I have some mobility issues that have come up in the past two or three years and progressively getting worse. I can't walk only a couple of blocks, and if you're in Ottawa you have to walk quite a bit. The other thing is, I don't really feel comfortable on my feet so I don't want to fall on my face."
He is also looking forward to spending time with his family. MacKenzie is 76 years old with eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
During his interview with Dan and Marcie this morning, MacKenzie also talked about the following:
- His 30-year policing career with the Woodstock Police Service
- Why he decided to enter politics after retiring from the Woodstock Police Service
- His thoughts on Paul Martin serving as the Liberal Prime Minister of a minority government when he was first elected in June 2004.
- His thoughts on current Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre.
- What's going to happen after he retires and the byelection process.
