A big celebration for ISAN in Oxford County. Today marks National Ribbon Skirt Day, as a woman was shamed for wearing her ribbon skirt at school on a formal day.

OXFORD COUNTY - It is a special day for the Indigenous Solidarity & Awareness Network of Oxford.

For ISAN it is National Ribbon Skirt Day, which is remember an Indigenous woman who was shamed for wearing her ribbon skirt on a formal day at school.

Founder of ISAN, Patricia Marshal on what this means.

"On this day, we celebrate the resiliency and the beauty of wearing our ribbon skirts, as I am wearing mine today. Ribbon skirts can be formal wear, it can be ceremonial, it can be everyday wear. For a lot of people part of the decolonization process has to do with their fashion choices too."

Marshal says that each Nation has specific skirts, and that each coloured ribbon has a different meaning, which is important to them.

She adds, she is always trying to learn and understand.

"It's kind of a learning process. Everybody is at a different stage of learning right now. I regularly look up what does this colour mean to understand."

Marshal adds her favourite colour is yellow, which has to do with suicide survival and awareness.

She suffered from self harm when she was younger, and wearing yellow means to embrace the sunshine.
