The story of George Leslie Mackay is going to be brought to life on stage in Thistle Theatre's latest production.
EMBRO - Thistle Theatre's latest production will double as a history lesson for some Oxford residents.
Kai the Barbarian will follow the story of George Leslie Mackay, a Zorra native who went on to become the first Presbyterian missionary to go to Formosa; now known as Taiwan.
Co-Producer Sue Hilborn says he's still honoured overseas today and even has his own holiday.
"There's monuments to him and banners on the road. He's just a huge hero and here in Oxford he's not that well known."
Hilborn says the show will have something for everyone.
"There is lots of action in the play. In a lot of ways it's also a love story between George and Minnie; a Formosan lady he married and helped him in his mission in Formosa."
Opening night is slated for Wednesday March 21st at the Embro Town Hall, which also happens to be Mackay's 174th birthday. The final show will take place on Saturday March 31st.
